Blue-footed boobies live off the western coasts of Central and South America. They spend their days flying in the air in search of food and their nights on the ground in the comfort of their nests.

• Their name was derived from the Spanish word “bobo”, which means stupid. Early European colonists saw the species as clumsy because of the way they walked on land. However, their coordination diving or flying is much more skilful.

• The blue shade of the boobies webbed feet comes from the carotenoid pigments which is gained from its diet of fresh fish. It helps the bird’s immune functions, which of course makes it healthier. Therefore, they can communicate their health status with prospective partners all by showing their feet.

• Blue-footed boobies can dive down from heights of up to 100 m in the sky and plunge underwater as deep as 25 m. All in order to search for prey.
